What happened on that first day of November 1755 would change Lisbon forever.
A long earthquake followed by a tsunami and several fires devastated the center of the medieval city. Faced with such a disaster, it was imperative to react quickly and effectively. The response came swiftly from José I’s strongman, Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, the future Marquis of Pombal, who ordered the ‘care of the living and burial of the dead’ to prevent epidemics, the distribution of food, arresting and hanging thieves and criminals, demolishing what remained of the ruins and clearing the streets of rubble. Then, think about rebuilding a new city. An innovative, geometric and rationalist design was chosen, with wide, aligned streets and homogeneous blocks with buildings with simple façades. In just three years, the plan was ready and construction began.

MAIN POINTS OF INTEREST

Marquês de Pombal Square
The square pays homage to the Marquis of Pombal and statesman who ruled between 1750-77.
His image stands at the top of a column, his hand resting on a lion, his eyes looking towards Baixa, the centre of Lisbon that Pombal rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake.

Liberdade Avenue
This is one of Lisbon's main avenues, connecting Praça Marquês de Pombal to Praça dos Restauradores.
About 90 meters wide and 1100 meters long, it was built between 1879 and 1886 in the style of the Champs-Elysées in Paris and quickly became a reference point for the wealthier classes to locate their homes there.
Today it is considered the 35th most expensive avenue in the world.

Comércio Square
Destroyed by the 1755 earthquake, it was rebuilt and became a fundamental element of the Marquis of Pombal's plan.
It was the maritime gateway to Lisbon and today is still one of the largest squares in Europe, covering some 36,000 square meters.
